Mr. H: My Obi-Wan Kenobi

In Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi helps Luke Skywalker become a Jedi. Obi-Wan taught Luke every technique that Obi-Wan knew. Luke became a wonderful Jedi. But in the end, Obi-Wan passes on.

Mr. H is my own Obi-Wan Kenobi. He has taught me so much about deafness and how to accept it. When I was growing up, I was a hearing child. But then ten years later, I was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor called Germinoma. I went through surgery, chemo therapy and radiation.

I was good for one year, but then I relapsed. That’s when my doctors decided for me to go through a more aggressive treatment. I was to have a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT). There was a lot of possible side effects for this certain treatment. One of the side effects was hearing loss. Unfortunately, I had that side effect happen to me.

I had a hard time trying to cope with me being deaf. I went back to the 8th grade trying to be a hearing person again. But I was really struggling. I also wasn’t getting good grades at all.

My teachers, my mom and I decided to for me to go to another school with a deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) program. I was really struggling here also in the begging of school. But Ms. Murphy, my DHH teacher helped me to keep going. I survived my first year in the DHH program. In fact, I graduated with a presidential award!

I got to meet Mr. H the following year. He was my first deaf teacher who truly understood me. Mr. H understands me because he was born hearing and became deaf when he was older just like me. I have had meltdowns because I was trying to be a “hearing” person again. I tried to hide under this mask of shame. I didn’t really have any “deaf’ friends. All of my friends were hearing. I would miss out in conversations and everything. I thought I was broken. But Mr. H showed me that being deaf is really a good thing. I now look at myself as  whole.

Mr. H is leaving to go teach at a deaf school in a Fremont however. So he will not be my teacher anymore. I will miss him terribly, but I know that I will be fine. He taught me everything I need to know to be a “Jedi”. Mr. H: my Obi-Wan Kenobi

Hello World!

Hello everyone! My name is Janessa Sales and I am a deaf person. I was not born deaf, but I did have cancer and a certain type of chemo therapy made me lose my hearing. But it’s sort of fun being deaf.  I’m making this blog so that I can share with the world.

There will be more blogs soon!

Mr. H.

This is my first Deaf teacher, Mr. H.  He is a wannabe Jedi, but kinda cool anyway.

More to come later on this.
